The Cumbria Union of Golf Clubs Senior Squad is affiliated to the Cumbria Union of Golf Clubs Organisation and we work closely with that association and report to their committee on a regular basis. The Senior Squad was formed in 2001 to give senior (55 years and over) golfers with low handicaps the opportunity to play golf on a scratch basis against other low handicapped golfers from the other Northern Counties. We now have matches against Cheshire, Durham, Lancashire Northumberland and Yorkshire. We also enter a six man team in the Northern Counties team competition and from this competition the winning county team goes forward to the national Championship plus teams to play the Midlands and Scotland are selected.
In 2011 a formal league was created within the Northern Counties Golf Association. This has provided more focus and competiveness within the county senior golf.
The matches are played with a team of 12 playing 9 holes greensome in the morning and 18 hole fourball in the afternoon. In addition this next year we have agreed with some counties to field extra reserve players to have an additional match on the day. This will enable those on the edge of selection competitive golf against the other counties and promote more squad harmony. We have around 20 members of the squad currently so we consider these games an important adition.. We will also continue to hold matches against the county ladies team and junior team, which provides good challenges and warm up for both sides.
We believe that 2023 will be a good year for Cumbria senior squad, but would very much like to ecourage any new emerging talent over 55 to join us. If you have any interest and low single figure handicap please contact Alan Shaw cugcsensec@outlook.com 07742011153
